Best home safes/Bag

Updated: Jul 20

Looking for the best home safes for the ultimate security. Want to keep all your important materials and paperwork tucked away and secure. I got you covered with this article on the top 5 home safes.

Chances are you have valuable items in your home you want to keep safe from fires, floods, burglaries or other unexpected events. I understand that in fact I understand completely seeing as My family recently had a severe house fire to the point that we had to be re-homed. We too had a home safe which kept all of our important documents safe from the fire and water from the fire department.

There are a few variables to consider before purchasing a safe, including size, lock style , is it for travel or just for home, and portability. Sadly size was not something we included when buying our safe, so we could not travel with the safe, and in stead had to just grab our documents and leave the safe behind.

I will be including the safe that we had specifically, as well as multiple different variations and verity's, the links to the products in this articles. Depending on your needs you should be able to find what you need hopefully.

Variables to consider when buying a home safe:

1. Size:

First before buying a safe, you should figure out what size safe you will need before purchasing, Think about the items you will be placing into the safe. My family placed large documents, envelopes, money, and more into the safe we had. You should figure out the inside dimensions, because all though the outside may look big, the inside may be small and compact.

2. Lock style

second there are many lock types and styles, but the ending variable depends on you, your comfortably and how fast you want to access your documents if a emergency occurs.

Manuel safe locks( key locks): Which are the standard options. which is what my family had.comes supplied with 2 keys and couldn’t be easier to use. These locks are extremely high-quality and very durable, plus they’re perfect for those of us who may not be the best at remembering numeric passwords.

Electronic safe locks: which I don't think is great Because it may backfire and get stuck, and be hard to open. Also known as digital safes, But if remembering a password is easier by all means go ahead.

Combination safe locks: Which I also Like a lot, because it makes it harder for outsiders to break into. These locks can have over one million possible combinations – so it’s also going to be near-impossible for someone to guess your code.

Bio metric safe locks: Which simply works by scanning your unique fingerprint – which is generally stored on a connected electronic device, fingerprints are pretty difficult to replicate or alter so as long as someone doesn’t have access to your hand you’ve got peace of mind no one who isn’t authorized is getting in. Also a great safe for guns and keeping them away from kids.

Waterproof bag caches: Now these aren't your typical safes because there not safes at all but I figured why not include waterproof accessories, and you can make it a safe.

You could place your copies of important items and documents into a waterproof bag/ vacuum sealing bag and then place it into the fireproof bag, and put it into a cache container. You could use this as a DIY safe hack or a cache hack. Which I would recommend, and because its a bag/ cache its much more portable and easier to grab and go.

3. Is it for travel or just for home?

Think about if you want to use it for work travels, vacation travels, or just keep it at home. Sometimes people may want both. which is why i recommended safe bags in this article, because it can be used for both, as well as be used as a cache.

4. Portability:

Having a safe that is portable may or may not be essential to your planning depending on your situation. Like my families situation we had a large heavy duty safe that we could not take with up, but we also didn't necessarily need to, but because we wanted to.

You may have a situation where you have a gun and needed a safe to store it away from the kids, and needed to travel with it, but under wraps. Or simply for comfort because you know its going to help protect the important items you need.

Vaultz Combination Lock Box, 7.75 x 7.25 x 10 Inches( 6,768 ratings and 4.5 stars)

Now so many people had mixed views on the vaultz combination lock box and I can understand why, I feel like a lot of people mistake this box for a hardcore to the bone safe box when it's not.

That is not what this box is for and I seen one review of someone saying they think it's a toy box. I feel like the problems lie in how people are using and mistreating (for some) the box, because like I mentioned previously the vaultz lock box is not a toy, but its not a hardcore safe box either.

The material is made from, aluminum, chrome, and steel. This locking storage box is ideal place for wallets, cash, passports, birth certificate, medication, prescriptions, pills and other private or semi-valuable items. Lightweight, strong and durable lock box, and rubber feet prevent skidding and scuffing. Lock Box is compatible with a double loop tether for additional security.

I actually bought a vaultz combo lock box in the early half of 2021 for my own paperwork, trinkets, money, and more. I literally studied the box, the reviews, and watched videos before I even decided to buy it.

It was a medium sized box rather than this specific one, but if you followed the instructions well its works quite well for what I needed it for. I still have it today, little scuffed up but still holding up well.

5. Water Bag caches: (DIY)

How about diying your own makeshift safe/cache. I can say this idea may not be good for storing firearms, but definitely everything else. So if you are a prepper you should know what a cache is, if not.

A survival cache are a good way to split up your supplies so that they are not all kept in one location. You can have a survival cache for firearms, I'm just saying this particular one is not good for that. (Want to learn more about survival caches click here.)

This method offers better security for a couple of reasons:

1. You need to take into consideration that your home and bug out location are susceptible to destruction. This could be due to fire or a natural disaster.

2. Your home and bug out location can be raided by people who want to take what you have.

3. If you needed you leave the home and couldn't go back for supplies and stuff. your survival cache will provide you with the means to survive. The survival caches need to be in close proximity to your home, but never to close.

What containers should you use?

First and foremost you need something waterproof and sealed because if water get into, on it, it can lead to corrosion and rust, which nobody wants. It also must be insect and rodent proof. I will go into details about these (items in this article.)

Here's some popular prepper ideas:

Ammunition containers:

Many ammo boxes have a waterproof seal. However, they are still susceptible to corrosion and rust. This is best for short term use, but it may be a way around this. Use vacuum seal bags over the container. double bag and seal it.

Using pvc tubing:

This is a go-to for many preppers when considering underground storage containers. Here is are directions on how to use pvc tubing for building a cache.

Food safe bucket with waterproof lid with tight seal, and screw lid:

These can hold large quantities of items. The only problem with these are that they are large so it take longer to bury due to the size, But still not a bad suggestion.

The Idea is to store you items in separate waterproof dry bags, or vacuum seal bags. Both options have bags of multiple sizes for many things. The key is to put into the survival cache what you need based on your personal situation.

Just remember, creating a cache isn’t as simple as throwing a few things into a bag or box. There are considerations to be made when choosing how to store your supplies. If it's something you need to quick grab I suggest putting it some where close like the local park.

In a hidden compartment of your car. I seen a couple videos of people putting their bug out bags in secret compartments they made in the trunk of their care. (I will go into more details in this article.)
